Post TelcoTV: Advertising Beat Goes On
Bob Wallace
11/17/2008 If you thought the tight focus on advertising options for telcoTV might slow after last week’s show of the same name, think again. BigBand Networks Inc. (BBND) and platform-agnostic content security company Widevine Inc. today announced a development whereby the vendor's multiservices platform can insert ads into already-encrypted content. The news is just the latest development further fueling telco TV provider interest in advertising systems of all shapes and size, perhaps because advertising represents a new revenue opportunity beyond their current service/content monthly subscriptions, in-home equipment rental and perhaps pay VoD movies. BigBand claims its newly launched Media Services Platform, the BigBand MSP2000, has been integrated with Widevine’s Cypher downloadable, conditional access offering. The duo claims this lets service providers insert advertising on encrypted high-definition and standard-definition video streams, in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 formats. Inserting ads directly into encrypted video streams gives service providers an operationally efficient approach to ad targeting, while keeping programming content secure. The capability does not require operators to de-encrypt, insert ads, and re-encrypt video streams. BigBand says the new MSP2000 provides the flexibility to locate splicing nearer to the edge of the operator's network for improved ad targeting without compromising programming security. While Widevine works with a variety of operators including telcos and satellite operators, BigBand is best known for its work with cabelcos. Just last week the infrastructure vendor announced a supplier deal with Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ).
