Alltel: 28% More Subscribers, 42% Higher Data ARPU

11/04/2008

Verizon Wireless seems to have made a good choice in going down on bended knee for Alltel Communications LLC, beyond the obvious benefit of snagging the No. 1 wireless operator position.

That’s because Alltel, the No. 5 domestic wireless carrier with 14 million subscribers, reported some hot results for the fourth quarter, including more than 1 million gross (335,152 net) customer adds and data ARPU that is up 42 percent — to $8.99 — year over year.

Alltel is thus set to become a growth engine for Verizon, whose proposed $28 billion merger with Alltel was approved by the FCC on Tuesday — a development that will propel Verizon into the No. 1 wireless position ahead of AT&T Inc. (which remains the world’s largest phone company).

Alltel’s revenue for the third quarter totaled $2.5 billion, which was offset somewhat by a $55.2 million loss stemming from the 2007 merger with TPG Capital and GS Capital partners, the carrier said.
