Best of WiMAX World Awards Honor Leaders in Innovation

xchange and Trendsmedia presented six Best of WiMAX 2008 awards to five distinguished recipients at ceremonies following the close of the first day’s sessions at the WiMAX World Conference & Expo held Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 in Chicago. The awards were presented by Tim McElligott, editor in chief of Billing & OSS World and a contributing editor for xchange, and Emily Nagle Green, president and CEO of Yankee Group, which owns Trendsmedia.


Tim McElligott, xchange contributing editor (far left), and Emily Nagle Green, president and CEO of Yankee Group (far right), presented the Best of WiMAX World 2008 awards to the winners: (left to right) Eran Eshed, co-founder and vice president of marketing and general manager, Altair Semiconductor; Scott Sweetland, chief visionary officer, Ceragon Networks; Hossein Parandeh, director of WiMAX global marketing, Motorola; Jeff Thompson, CEO, Towerstream; Darren McQueen, vice president of wireless broadband access technologies, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility; and Rehan Jalil, president and CEO, WiChorus.

The Best of WiMAX World Awards recognize leaders in the development and deployment of WiMAX technologies. Nominations were open to exhibitors, sponsors and speakers at the WiMAX World Conference & Expo. Winners and Industry Choice finalists were selected by a judging panel of experts from the WiMAX community. The Industry Choice winner was determined by on-site and online votes by conference delegates.

The Best of WiMAX World Award winners were:

  • Chip Design: Altair Semiconductor for the ALT2150 mobile WiMAX chipset

  • System Design: WiChorus for Mobile Internet Gateway (MIG)

    Rehan Jalil (second from left), president and CEO of WiChorus, and Eric Andrews (second from right), vice president, product management of WiChorus, received the System Design award.
  • Service Provider Deployment: Towerstream for their New York City network

    Jeff Thompson, CEO of Towerstream, accepted the award in the Service Provider Deployment category.
  • Device/Peripheral/Application Software: Motorola for the USBw100 WiMAX adaptor

    Hossein Parandeh (center), director of WiMAX global marketing at Motorola, accepted the award for Device/Peripheral/Application Software.
  • Industry Innovation: Ceragon Networks for FibeAirIP-10 carrier-grade wireless Ethernet backhaul product family

    Mark Pride, director of East Region sales for Ceragon, received the award in the Industry Innovation category.
  • Industry Choice: Motorola for the USBw100 WiMAX adaptor

    Darren McQueen, vice president of wireless broadband access technologies, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility, displays Motorola’s awards in the Device/Peripheral/Application Software and Industry Choice categories.

The Best of WiMAX World 2008 Awards judging panel consisted of Craig Mathias, principal, Farpoint Group; Will Strauss, principal analysts, Forward Concepts; Adlane Fellah, CEO and founder, Maravedis Inc.; Caroline Gabriel, lead research analyst, Rethink Research; Philip Marshall, vice president on enabling technologies, Yankee Group; and representatives from xchange and Trendsmedia.
