chaska.net Taps Tropos Networks

05/25/2004

The City of Chaska, Minn., is using equipment from Wi-Fi supplier Tropos Networks Inc. to build a 16-square-mile Wi-Fi mesh network for residential and city use. The city owns its own wireless ISP, chaska.net.

The ISP was formed five years ago for the city’s educational institutions, and it is expanding to offer Chaska’s 18,000 residents and 7,500 households high-speed access for $15.99 per month. The network also will provide broadband services to police officers and municipal workers in the field.

When it is complete, the network will provide users with ubiquitous broadband (1 Mbps symmetrical) coverage and unlimited mobility within city limits, according to a Tropos Networks press release. The first phase of the network – using 50 Tropos Wi-Fi cells and covering more than four square miles – was installed and in testing in less than two weeks.
