Veraz Networks has publicly announced the first service provider customer of a new control switch capability that enables carriers to manage multiple switching nodes as if they are one switch.

Golden Telecom Inc. of Russian, where ECI Telecom Inc. distributes Veraz products, is using the capability – part of a Veraz IP softswitch and media gateway solution – for a massive upgrade of its TDM network to a next-generation network.

The carrier is expanding its Federal Transit Network to provide domestic long distance services. The Veraz ControlSwitch Interconnect softswitch along with Veraz I-Gate 4000 PRO and I-Gate 4000 EDGE Media Gateways will be deployed across the entire FTN.

The specific value of this “multimillion-dollar” deal was not disclosed.

Managing multiple switches as if they are one results in fewer errors and more efficient use of human resources ins conducting upgrades – such as adding new services, nodes or other changes – to the network, said Ed Camarena of Veraz. It also means people don’t have to be deployed locally to manage the switching.

Camarena said with this control switch capability, Veraz is leveraging the fact its a COTS platform.
