Motorola's Zander Considers Video

Today at NXTComm, Ed Zander, president and CEO of Motorola Inc., examined the question of whether video is the next killer app for mobility, and seemed to arrive at "yes."

Television and the handset will be the two most transformational devices going forward, he said during a keynote address. "Television is where you get the content, and the mobile device is where you take it." After all, YouTube generates as much traffic today as the whole of the Internet did in 2000, he noted.

Zander took the opportunity to position Motorola as the go-to video partner for operators, highlighting the vendor's long history in developing the guts of the first televisions, through the 50 million set-top boxes it has deployed and its No. 1 status in the headend market.

"What's happening as we go forward," he said, "is that consumers are exploring apps and learning to create new things. So in the future, is personcast. You are the TV station."

Zander noted that the RAZR 2, due later in the year, will enable video sharing, with two hours of storage on the device. He also said that "follow-me TV" is in the works, which will allow "placeshifting," where a person can port content around via a DVR-style interface. And Motorola is working on a new digital advertising platform.

"As the networks ramp up to accommodate this, the best is yet to come," he said. "You will make the content work for you, instead of you working for the content."
