Cox Business Taps BroadSoft for VoIP
Paula Bernier
06/20/2007 BroadSoft today revealed that Cox Business Services is using its VoIP application software. “It’s our first big MSO win that we’re announcing,” said Scott Wharton, vice president of marketing at BroadSoft, who added the company also has several unannounced cableco customers. Cox, which Wharton said is the most successful cableco on the business services front, has more than 1 million lines. It plans to migrate those to IP, he added. Cox will use BroadSoft’s BroadWorks VoIP platform to deliver advanced hosted PBX services, which provide enhanced PBX functionality over any IP connection and eliminate premise-based solutions that require highly trained technicians. The BroadWorks VoIP platform also provides the ability to self-provision and tie communications into one unifying service, enabling multilocation businesses to function more effectively as an integrated enterprise and keeping all sites securely connected. Wharton said this announcement signals that the cablecos are getting serious about business services. He added that the cablecos’ move into business services, based on PacketCable Multimedia, is opening an opportunity for vendors like BroadSoft. While the cablecos’ residential services where based on PacketCable 1.0, which requires a bundled solution including CPE, application and softswitch, BroadSoft was unable compete for this business, said Wharton. But the PacketCable Multimedia spec http://www.packetcable.com/specifications/multimedia.html upon which these new business services are being based open the door to VoIP platforms like the one BroadSoft offers, and are more SIP and IMS0 friendly, according to Wharton.
