Microsoft Spinoff Aims to Change Mobile Web Use

03/27/2007

Microsoft Corp. has launched an independent company with the goal of changing the way people use the Internet with mobile devices.

ZenZui will help cell phone users set a personal interface that lets them link directly to their favorite spots on the Web.

The company’s Zooming User Interface initially was developed by the Microsoft Research lab. ZenZui worked with Microsoft IP Ventures to acquire the technology and assistance in securing venture capital funding to help launch the company.

ZenZui’s high-frame rate zooming user interface employs up to 36 individual “tiles” that are selected and customized by users to reflect their interests with relevant content, interactive communications and data. The modular tile interface lets users sync, surf and share digital Web content.

“This innovative technology developed with the help of Microsoft Research has provided a strong foundation from which ZenZui has developed a unique user experience,” said Eric Hertz, CEO of ZenZui. “ZenZui’s compelling platform is already creating excitement among carriers, content providers, interactive agencies and major marketers.”

Companies involved with the initial trial include Kayak.com, OTOlabs, Avenue A, Razorfish and Traffic.com Inc.

ZenZui closed a Series-A financing round of $12 million from Oak Investment Partners and Hunt Ventures.
