RBN Adds Full Programmability to RBNi 2330
Khali Henderson
06/09/2006 RBN announced at GLOBALCOMM this week that it is adding full programmability to its RBNi GigaEdge 2330 mini MSPP, which is new to the North American market. “Every port is programmable,” said Ross Halgren, vice president of network architecture. “Today, it might function as a SONET TDM mux, but you can program it to be Ethernet.” Significantly, he said, the 2330 is 100 percent programmable, unlike others that offer programmability on the front end, but the back-end is hardwired. He said the capability always has been available, but now the company is promoting it as “one platform to do any optical transport,” he said, noting changes in the marketplace that are requiring carriers to look more closely at moving to packet. Most upgrades, like assigning a new protocol to a port, can be done in-service. “But if you are changing from SONET to Ethernet, it’s not an in-service upgrade, but no personnel [are] required at the site.” The 2330 is available now and starts at $12,000. The company also announced this week it closed its most recent round of funding and has completed a recapitalization of the company. The funds will help support the commercial launch in North American as well and increasing manufacturing volumes. RBN Inc. www.rbni.com
