NEC Debuts Optical Network Planning Tool
Khali Henderson
06/09/2006 NEC America Inc. announced this week at GLOBALCOMM its SpectralWave Optical Network Planner (ONP), a software tool that automates the process of optical network planning and design. Rich Moran, director of product marketing for NEC’s optical networking systems division said the ONP is a “what-if” planner. “It’s not a small challenge to take into account the ability of a ROADM,” he said, noting the reconfigurable capabilities included in its SpecralWave WDM system. The SpectralWave ONP allows carriers to specify varying optical conditions and alter network variables, including traffic demand, transmission distance, fiber type and characteristics, in an effort to determine optimal locations for network elements, nodes and repeater sites. ONP features optical transmission simulation functions that accurately predict optical network performance from initial deployment through end-of life. In addition, it uses wizards to present graphical representations of network design and equipment configurations, and generates lists of materials and pricing to further assist users in the optical network design and deployment process.
