Cisco Introduces Intelligent Services Gateway
Khali Henderson
06/08/2006 Cisco Systems announced this week at GLOBALCOMM the availability of the Intelligent Services Gateway (ISG) feature set for the Cisco 10000 Series, Cisco 7200 Series and 7301 model routers. “ISG is the first step toward transitioning many services to many screens,” said Suraj Shetty, director of marketing, Service Provider Routing Technology Group at Cisco. He explained it will be critical to manage multiple services as a “seamless, single service,” and to do this will require a “policy-enabled edge.” To that end, the Cisco ISG controls subscriber access at the edge of the network to enable the provisioning and management of broadband networks for a broad range of access and edge technologies, subscriber numbers and service types, effectively linking subscriber service requests with distributed policy control to help ensure a high quality of experience. As part of the Service Exchange Framework (SEF) of the Cisco IP NGN architecture, ISG provides, for example, multidimensional identity capabilities that use a single sign-on and subscriber profile to enable tailored services. Dynamic personalization capabilities apply subscriber-specific personal preferences. In addition, integrated policy management allows service providers to dynamically apply QoS on a per-subscriber basis. By integrating the policy manager with the network equipment, Shetty said, those decisions can be made locally. Finally, operational integration simplifies the network management of multiple services. ISG acts as an open integration point that Shetty said translates XLM programming language into network language, allowing providers to speed new service offerings to market.
