Tellabs Adds Multidegree ROADM

03/22/2006

Tellabs announced this week it has added a multidegree Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer to its Tellabs 7100 optical transport system to enable service providers to instantly provision bandwidth where it is required.

"Consumers want to use Internet and video services on their own terms, when and where they need it, presenting tremendous network management challenges for service providers," said Dan Kelly, executive vice president of transport products for Tellabs. "The new ROADM capabilities along with the packet and Synchronous Optical Network switch core on the Tellabs 7100 system address these needs for our customers."

The 7100 integrates DWDM, SONET and Ethernet switching into a single platform. With the new eight-degree ROADM, service providers have 44 channels of bandwidth for voice, data and video and can expand network capacity one optical link (up to 440 gigabits) at a time.

"ROADM-enabled carrier equipment is an economical solution for next-generation service delivery, particularly video," said Michael Howard, principal analyst for Infonetics Research. "Tellabs' ROADM expansion furthers the company's position in optical transport."

According to Infonetics, the global carrier ROADM market surpassed $600 million in 2005, tripling earlier forecasts.
