Transmode Releases 2x2 GigE Transponder
Khali Henderson
06/09/2005 Transmode’s new plug-in unit for its TM-Series platform called the Double Dual Gigabit Ethernet Transponder is now generally available worldwide. The TM Series was formerly known as Mentis and was the primary product from Lumentis, which merged with Transmode earlier this year. The Double Dual Gigabit Ethernet Transponder is a small form-factor pluggable that allows the deployment of low-cost metro WDM nodes enabling backhaul of gigabit Ethernet traffic from DSL and cable broadband access systems. The card supports four gigabit Ethernet signals electrically multiplexed into two wavelengths, with optional 1+1 protection on each wavelength. The transponder can be installed in any TM-Series chassis, including the 1RU TM-101 subrack, creating a compact fully integrated WDM node with add/drop optical filters, multiple gigE client signals, protection and in-band management capabilities. “Having a single rack unit product that delivers that amount of capacity is quite a unique proposition,” says Michael Crossey, vice president of marketing and business development for Transmode. “The level of integration, the density and the small footprint and the fact that it is a sub $5,000 solution – all of those are significant.” Crossey says the availability of the card was instrumental in winning a recent contract with Telenor, the Norwegian PTT.
