Motorola Inc., which recently won the PON business of Verizon Communications Inc., at SUPERCOMM this week officially took the wraps off its next-generation AXS2200 optical line terminal (OLT) solution and expanded its optical network terminal (ONT) product line.
The OLT supports a variety of access options, including fiber to the node, and BPON and GPON applications. That support for BPON and GPON was a key requirement for Verizon, says Steve Hersey, Motorola’s senior director of marketing for fiber to the premises networks. Verizon has been deploying BPON technology from Motorola and Tellabs as part of its FiOS FTTP builds to date, but has said it intends to move to a GPON architecture soon.
The AXS2200 product line further includes ONTs, for which Motorola now offers GPON support.
Also this week, Motorola unveiled a single-family ONT with support for MoCA home networking to connect the ONT on the side of the home with the broadband router device within the home. The company also has new multidwelling ONTs. One supports up to 16 dwelling units on a single device. A second MDU ONT is a single-dwelling box for fiber-to-the-riser applications. MDUs are a big application for Verizon, says Hersey, because it allows them to reach a large number of customers at once. He says Verizon intends to use both the multiuser and single-unit MDU ONTs.
