Tekelec Wireless Multimedia Gateway Supports UMA Technology, Enabling

03/15/2005

Tekelec announced during CTIA support for Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology on its wireless multimedia gateway, the Tekelec 8000. With the UMA capability, the Tekelec 8000 Wireless Multimedia Gateway provides seamless access into next-generation, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures, according to the company.

UMA supplies access to GSM and GPRS mobile services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. With UMA technology, service providers can enable subscribers to roam and handover between cellular networks and public and private unlicensed wireless networks using dual-mode mobile handsets. They are able to reduce congestion and minimize spectrum limitations in dense areas by offloading from GSM networks to Wi-Fi technology. Subscribers benefit from consistent mobile voice and data services as they transition between networks.

Tier-1 mobile operators in Europe and North America are trialing and deploying the Tekelec 8000 Wireless Multimedia Gateway with UMA technology support. They join Tier-1 operators in Asia and North America already relying on the Tekelec 8000 Wireless Multimedia Gateway with Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) capabilities.
