net.com SCREAMs for Converged Services

11/16/2004

net.com this week at TelcoTV in Orlando announced some significant updates to the SCREAM service creation platform that will enable it to better underpin converged services.

These updates include enhanced security features, support for Layer 3 VPNs, MPLS and multicasting (for IP video) over DSL networks. IP multicasting is a more efficient way to deliver the same television programming to a number of subscribers.

As the market for triple-play services heats up, the ability for carriers to multicast video will be a clear competitive advantage, net.com says.

The enhanced QoS capabilities of SCREAM also enable carriers more effectively to deliver the service level agreements required to support an integrated portfolio of voice, video and Internet access services.

With U.S phone companies losing voice revenue, entertainment services represent an obvious target to recover lost sales, says Stephen Gleave, vice president of marketing for net.com.

Still, smaller phone companies admit they are not making money in the video business yet because, for starters, Gleave says, obtaining content such as movies is expensive. TV service is the new concept among phone companies and the networks were not engineered to support video. This is where net.com and other manufacturers step in to support video services.

“There are still some sizeable bloody deals out there with carriers,” Gleave, who hails from the U.K., says when asked why net.com is partially targeting the carrier market.
