NDS Releases Security Solution for Telcos Offering IPTV

10/12/2004

NDS (Booth 225) has released a secure content protection solution designed for telephone companies and broadband providers offering two-way IP television.

VGS, part of NDS' Synamedia IP content security system, is a hardware/software solution that does not require operators to install a smart card in the set-top box.

A hardware-based solution "is going to be more robust"  than a software-only system in delivering secure content over a network, says Ian Tapp, vice president of market development with United Kingdom-based NDS. A software solution, he says, is more vulnerable to outside intrusion.

Although costs vary depending on the number of customers an operator is supporting, Tapp says the cost of deployment for the solution is likely around $15 per subscriber. The company says a secure non-proprietary processor sits in the set-top box, which communicates with the headend VGS server.

NDS has worked with about 35 set-top box vendors, Tapp says, and integrated its systems with approximately 300 set-top box models.

In a separate development, VideoGuard, NDS' core content security technology, has been integrated into a product by TANDBERG Television: the TT7116 IP Streamer, which is used to support TV and VoD services over an IP or ATM network. Tapp says TANDBERG is providing equipment necessary to transmit video content into a digitally-compressed form suitable for distribution over an IP network.
