XO Chooses Ciena for Metro Makeover

Operator to Mix, Match Protocols on Single Wavelengths

09/16/2008

Ciena Corp.(CIEN) today announced that XO Communications has selected Ciena’s CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform to support the delivery of big-bandwidth, on-demand optical metro network services.

The platform lets XO deliver a wider range of managed private network services offerings to customers who require scalable bandwidth and expanded reach capabilities for key business applications, according to Ciena.

The value of the deal was not disclosed.

“Our large enterprise and service provider customers are demanding advanced services with higher bandwidth requirements,” said Randy Nicklas, chief technology officer at XO Communications.

“Ciena’s CN 4200 enables us to deliver higher-speed and lower-cost wavelength services to our customers, who can mix and match protocols on any single XO wavelength,” said Randy Nicklas, chief technology officer at XO, in prepared comments.

XO Communications will use the Ciena platform to support several private networks for customers’ Ethernet, storage and other managed services applications. Ciena says the CN 4200 platform will be deployed in XO’s metro networks nationwide “to support the intelligent aggregation and transport of high-capacity services.”
