Report: Worldwide IPTV Growth Strong Through 2012
03/19/2008
IPTV households reached 13.2 million last year and are forecast to grow 52.2 percent annually though 2012, according to a new study released today by IMS Research. It estimates that almost 8.4 million IP-enabled set-top boxes (STB) shipped worldwide in 2007.
IMS claims the study examines the worldwide IPTV market from the infrastructure needed to support IPTV to the operators that provide the video service. Also included is analysis on the delivery of linear and on-demand content via IP nets by telcos, cablecos and satellite operators.
“The increasingly competitive pay-TV landscape with proliferation of new content, triple/quadruple play offerings, and new Internet-based TV services is one of the main factors behind IPTV household growth,” said Shane Walker, research analyst at IMS, and author of the report.
The report also looks at the rapid uptake of IPTV services in China and South Korea, fueled in part by relaxed regulations. IMS says the report provides forecasts through 2012 for IPTV households, IP STB shipments and IP STB revenue.
