Verizon’s Barr to Retire

William Barr, general counsel of Verizon Communications Inc.(VZ), has announced his intention to retire at age 58. Before joining Verizon, where he helped engineer the company’s acquisition of MCI, Barr was executive vice president of government and regulatory advocacy, general counsel at GTE, where he worked from 1994 until GTE merged with Bell Atlantic to become Verizon in June 2000. Barr also is a former U.S. Attorney General, the 77th individual to hold the post. That was during President George H.W. Bush’s administration. He also was on the White House Domestic Policy Staff under President Reagan, and worked for the CIA.
