Verizon: Report of 100mbps FiOS in 2009 Was Erroneous

12/09/2008

In case you read the Telephony piece last week about Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and are now under the impression that the company expects to deliver 100mbps access via its FiOS starting next year, think again.

While recent Verizon comments may have led reporters to that conclusion, the service provider on Friday reportedly set the record straight, stating that although it’s testing 100mbps broadband on its FTTP network and should have the processes in place to support it starting next year, it doesn’t actually have plans to productize said capability in 2009.

As Telecompetitor reported today, the language used by Verizon executives that led to all this confusion can be considered a “land grab” by the telco, which wants to fuel the impression that it is making huge strides in broadband when, in reality, its FTTP network is only available to a small percentage of the population and those that do have the good luck of being within its reach will grow several years older before ever seeing 100mbps to the home.
