Verizon Rejects LTE Femtocells For Now
03/05/2009
Femtocells are not in the plans for Verizon Wireless in its first rollout of an LTE broadband mobile network, but the company is not ruling out using the tiny home base stations in the future. “[It] may be [we’ll use them] down the road,” Verizon said. Last year, the company’s CEO suggested femtos could be a good way to bring home networking services to customers along with its FiOS service, but that didn’t materialize in Verizon’s plans, at least for the first part of the rollout. Verizon says it’s concentrating on an LTE buildout for 20 to 30 U.S. markets sometime next year. The company named Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson as partners in the project last month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
