Verizon Inches Closer to D.C. FiOS Rollout
01/15/2009
As was anticipated, Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty has signed a bill approving Verizon Communications Inc.’s (VZ) TV franchise in the nation’s capital, taking the telco even closer to beginning network construction to deliver the service. Verizon has been on a recent roll in racking up franchises for densely populated areas, having gained approval for FiOS TV in the Big Apple late last year. “Now, a 30-day congressional review will be the final step in a process that will trigger a massive network investment, ultimately bringing District residents a superior alternative for their video entertainment,” said William R. Roberts, Verizon's regional president for Maryland and Washington, D.C. The telco says it will begin offering the service later this year and provide it throughout the district in nine years, all under the 15-year agreement. Verizon said it now will begin the upgrade of its District telecommunications network with fiber-optic connections directly to consumers' homes. “We plan to begin offering the first District residents our award-winning FiOS TV service later this year. Our FiOS Internet service with ultra fast speeds also will be available to customers."
