T-Mobile Kicks Off Android myTouch Pre-Ordering

07/08/2009

The T-Mobile USA Inc. is adding another Android to the family. And now, customers can pre-order it.

The carrier announced Wednesday that it is beginning a special pre-sale program for existing customers, who can visit www.t-mobilemytouch.com.

The myTouch joins T-Mobile’s G1 as a second Android-powered device. The operator is touting users’ ability to customize the phone with more than 5,000 apps, homescreen themes and exterior shells and gel skins.

The form factor is a rebranding of the HTC Magic, leaked earlier in the year. It differs from the Android-based G1 by having no physical keyboard (hence, presumably, the name). It’s also thinner and no longer has the protrusion at the bottom that the G1 sports.

And, it supports Microsoft Exchange. Otherwise, the $199 handset has the same features as the G1, like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, display size, camera and Google apps. It runs the “Cupcake” Android 1.5 OS update and supports 7.2mbps HSPA — a quality much-touted in the rival iPhone 3G S.
