The often-aired commercial from Verizon Wireless touting its push-to-talk functionality says it all. While it’s a cool feature that Nextel pioneered, it’s not the differentiator it once was. And that has become clear for Sprint-Nextel Corp.(S), as it struggled to make its Nextel acquisition pay off, then attempted to sell it off and now grapples to keep it going.
But keep it going it must, so Sprint is now working to give new life to the Nextel network, having recently cut a deal with Motorola, which will upgrade the network.
Sprint Nextel in February reported a massive net $29.5 billion loss for the fourth quarter thanks to the Nextel writedown. And CEO Dan Hesse said the carrier was in worse shape than he thought, with deteriorating conditions ahead.
