Sorrento OEMs 40G Product for the Metro

Metro optical equipment supplier Sorrento Networks is adding a 40G solution to its product line through an OEM deal with StrataLight Communications. Sorrento is calling its version of the 40G product the GigaMux-6440.

Sorrento co-founder and CEO Jim Nevelle told xchange this week that his company is currently in talks with customers regarding lab evaluations for the GigaMux-6440.

Sorrento’s existing solution is a 10G DWDM product for the metro, said Nevelle. The OEM relationship StrataLight allows Sorrento to expand its offer given “40G is seeping into the metro space,” he said, adding that the GigaMux-6440 can take four 10G solutions and put it into one 40G product, allow service providers to “break up” bandwidth as needed and enabling them to leverage their 10G investments.

Sorrento’s existing customers include Comcast Corp., Cox Communications, DT and tw telecom, among others. Sorrento, originally founded in the 1990s, was acquired by Zhone  in 2004, but then was spun out of Zhone in January of this year.
