Sonus Chops 50 Jobs

12/15/2008

Sonus Networks Inc. (SONS), which makes infrastructure for IP networks, is cutting 50 jobs by the end of this year (or, over the next two weeks).

The company is the latest victim to fall prey to the bad economy.

Sonus executives called the layoffs “right-sizing,” but that doesn’t seem like the appropriate description with Hanukkah and Christmas just around the corner.

Sonus will take a hit of between $850,000 and $950,000 in the fourth quarter for severance and other costs. The firm, based in Massachusetts, expects to save $5 million to $6 million annually because of the reductions.

Meanwhile, the company makes a point of noting it will hire “for select positions in some geographies to support business plans.”
