Sigma Adds UWB Support to Home Network Chipset
Bob Wallace
11/18/2008 Lost in the tidal wave of noise at TelcoTV was news that chip giant Sigma Designs Inc. (SIGM) had begun offering a processor that enables device makers to add ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to their home networking products. Adding higher-speed wireless networking support to home networks enables operators to better cope with a broad array of challenges in distribution of content to and within a consumer dwelling, with an increasing focus on high-definition (HD) content. In simple terms, adding UWB enables telco TV providers to move content between rooms in a house by piggybacking on already installed coaxial cable, and harnessing wireless within rooms. Sigma’s Wireless HDAV and CoAir products are based on the WiMedia Standard and can support data rates of up to 480 mbps with support for WLP (IP over UWB) and wireless USB host applications for service providers, networking equipment and retail CE manufacturers. The SoC is available now in sample quantities for device makers but is not yet in mass production, according to a spokesperson for the company.
