Siemens Says Goodbye to Telecom Industry

08/14/2008

After more than a century and a half, Siemens is getting out of the telecom business. The German company is selling a majority share of its cordless phone business ─ its last-remaining link to telecom ─ to Arques Industries.

Siemens’ first product was a telegraph needle intended to be a rival to Morse Code. In 1848, the company built Europe’s first long-distance telegraph line between Berlin and Frankfurt.

The Siemens name will continue to be associated with appliances, high-tech medical equipment and more.
