Senate to FCC: We Need Better Broadband Data
09/29/2008
Ever feel like the FCC’s broadband stats are a tad outdated or even as laughable as the agency’s definition of high-speed Internet? (200kpbs, by the way) Some senators have the same opinion and, even amid the market crisis of the past week, have passed a bill that would require the FCC to report better, more timely data on broadband deployment in the United States. “The federal government has a responsibility to ensure the continued rollout of broadband access, as well as the successful deployment of the next generation of broadband technology,” said Hawaii Democrat Daniel Inouye, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, in a prepared statement. “But as I have said before, we cannot manage what we do not measure. This bill will give us the baseline statistics we need in order to eventually achieve the successful deployment of broadband access and services to all Americans.” And, with any luck, it’ll modernize the definition of broadband.
