Report: Huawei Gaining Ground in North America

12/04/2008

A new report finds that China-based telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies has cracked the code to the North American market.

The company now is the No. 7 optical gear provider to Tier 2 and 3 carriers in the United States and Canada, according to the study.

Huawei has made big inroads in Africa, Asia and other regions where next-gen networks are being built. Many of those countries haven’t had even basic communications services, so they’re starting from scratch with equipment that Huawei develops and sells at much lower prices than larger, more well-known competitors.

Huawei even has been pinpointed as a potential buyer of Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) unit; purchasing that division would give Huawei instant access to even more North American market share. But Huawei is privately held and hasn’t indicated whether it might pursue the Nortel MEN acquisition.
