Procera Intros ‘Carrier-Class’ DPI Solution

A recently reinvigorated Procera Networks Inc. today unveiled two new deep packet inspection solutions the company says address the scale and functionality required by tier 1 service providers and can be placed anywhere in the network.

The new PacketLogic PL10000 family of products scales up to 80gbps of throughput, which Procera says is four times the capacity of its nearest competitor, allowing service providers to support millions of active subscribers. The new DPI products also give carriers the business intelligence, service creation, network visibility and control required to roll out new revenue-generating services and optimize network performance.

Procera CEO James Brear noted that service providers are limited in their ability to differentiate themselves in the marketplace and to offer customers various packages based on their requirements. For example, he said, his active Internet family, which uses its broadband connection for surfing, gaming and more, pays the same to the local cable modem service provider as does his mother, who uses the Internet only occasionally for online banking. However, he added, perhaps his mother should be paying Comcast Corp. around $7 a month while his monthly bill should be more in the $107 range.

Of course, without knowing who’s using broadband for what applications and with what frequency, service providers can’t do this kind of thing. But the new Procera DPI solutions include something called DRDL, or data stream recognition definition language, that enables service providers to see what services are running on their networks. It also presents carriers with related, real-time information about those services relative to security, congestion and bandwidth availability so service providers can manipulate their networks and business rules to best address such applications and create services (such as a gamer-focused service, for example) around them when it makes sense.

The new DPI solutions from Procera are ATCA-based and include 5RU device that delivers up to 20gbps of throughput, can support up to 1.5 million subscribers and 12 million flows; and a 12RU product that providers up to 80gbps throughput, can handle up to 5 million subscribers and 48 million flows. List prices for these products, which will be shown at the NXTcomm show in June in Las Vegas, range from $7,000 to $800,000.

Brear told xchange last week that Procera, which recently changed out its entire marketing and sales teams and this week expects to announce a new board member “with deep industry knowledge,” already has secured four customers for the new DPI solutions, which are generally available now.
