NXTcomm: Could Bandwidth Demands Make for Achy-Breaky Internet?
06/19/2008
Bandwidth demands eventually will break the Internet. That’s according to 51 percent of respondents in a recent survey conducted by Tellabs Inc. and research firm IDC. One out of four of those respondents think an Internet break could happen within two years, the survey found. "The findings of this survey make it very plain that bandwidth is not infinite," said Lee Doyle, a group vice president at IDC. "Unless there is sufficient investment into new infrastructure, the increased bandwidth demands of new advanced services could well outstrip capacity." Video is one of the biggest reasons most respondents fear an Internet breakage. Video traffic will increase to 75 percent of overall Internet traffic in five years, 40 percent of respondents said. That’s compared to video comprising 30 percent of such traffic today. Dealing with the congestion will require prioritizing via packet inspection and charging more for excess bandwidth, respondents said. Europe also will drive demand for mobile bandwidth, they noted. Tellabs polled 372 telecom professionals on June 17 at NXTcomm.
