OIF Addresses 100G Long-Haul DWDM

05/21/2008

The Optical Internetworking Forum’s (OIF) Physical and Link Layer Working Group (PLL WG) have designated a new project to address 100G long-haul DWDM.

The project will bring together service providers, data and optical networking equipment vendors, optical module and subsystem vendors, and underlying component providers. They’ll work to accelerate the availability of long-distance transmission solutions for 100G, the OIF said in a press release.

The 100G long-haul project will result in a DWDM transmission implementation agreement focused on a specific modulation format and receiver approach. It will seek to reach agreement on a forward error correction algorithm for the long-haul 100G application. The implementation agreement will build on work already underway defining 100 G Ethernet in the IEEE, and the new 100 G level of the optical transport hierarchy in the ITU-T.
