OFC NFOEC: Metcalfe Urges Audience to Move Away from SONET, Ready for Terabit Ethernet

Paula Bernier

Continued from page 1

Metcalfe said we may see terabit Ethernet as early 2015. However, he added that the fact that he’s talking about terabit Ethernet is bothersome for those who still have the telecom nuclear winter fresh in their minds and may fear a similar future scenario.

However, Metcalfe believes terabit Ethernet is clearly the way the world is moving in light of the always growing bandwidth demand, which has recently been kicked into high gear by video applications.

But while service providers can leverage their existing fiber and other infrastructure to do 40gig and 100gig, that will not be the case with terabit Ethernet, added Metcalfe. “It’ll be chaotic,” he said, noting terabit Ethernet will require a move away from 1500nm fiber and other popular equipment and technologies. However, he said, even that is good news given existing infrastructure is filling up, which means service providers will eventually have to run new fiber anyway.
