NXTcomm: Entone Launches Multiroom DVR Support on Home Gateway
Bob Wallace
06/18/2008 Entone Inc. added functionality to its Hydra home video gateways that enables operators to deliver multiroom DVR services as an addition to their IPTV services. The multifunction systems obviate the need for customers to have set-top boxes in the home. The added software for the gateway enables viewers to both record and view programming in any of up to seven TVs in a dwelling and uses widely deployed coaxial cable to support the underlying home networking foundation. “Telcos need to have something over cable,” said Entone CEO Steve McKay, of multiroom DVR services. Verizon is the only top-tier U.S. telco to already offer a multiroom DVR service, though AT&T Inc. has pledged to roll out a similar offering in the second half of this year. The Hydra gateway serves as far more than a VOD server, enabling an array of home media capabilities, including traditional STB functions, in a single hardware and software system. The multiroom DVR support enables consumers to view content in high-definition (HD) format and is available now. Pricing for the added software was not provided.
