NTT DoCoMo Outlines LTE Timeline
07/30/2009
Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo plans to launch an LTE 4G mobile broadband network in December 2010, it said this week. The cellco plans to spend $3.2 billion to $4.2 billion to upgrade 20,000 base stations to bring LTE service to 50 percent of Japan by 2014. Initially, the service will run on laptop cards, and then expand to handsets in 2011 with a dual-mode 3G/LTE approach. The timeline puts the carrier – known for being ahead of the curve in technology adoption – behind the likes of Telia Sonera and Verizon Wireless.
