New Products

For now, Nortel continues to be a public presence, demonstrating that R&D is apparently continuing despite financial struggles. At SUPERCOMM this week it announced the Communication Server 2000a (CS 2000) carrier IP softswitch, a new hardware platform. The idea is to boost service providers’ capacity in a smaller footprint, providing up to a 70-percent reduction in footprint and a 50-percent power savings over existing platforms. It supports call capacity in excess of 5 million Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCA).

It also released new SIP applications to go with the softswitch, including a hosted call-center feature for SIP terminals/clients; SIP mobile UC clients for easier end-user migration to SIP; and the extension of multimedia capabilities.

And finally on Wednesday, it introduced the Border Control Media Gateway 1000 (BCMG 1000), an IP-to-IP, session-aware media gateway. It’s part of the vendor’s Transit and Multimedia Interconnect solution for advanced IP media inter-working, encryption and IP voice enhancements, which improve the subscriber experience and allow users to communicate with anyone over IP, regardless of the other user’s device or media type.

“As VoIP and multimedia solutions and applications have become more widely deployed, service providers need help addressing IP media impairments that have become more prevalent in their multi-access networks,” said Jeremy Duke, founder and principal analyst, Synergy Research. “This creates an emerging market for session aware media gateways like Nortel’s BCMG 1000, which helps service providers to deliver communications across multiple IP networks and improve network quality, security and reliability.”

Meanwhile, it announced carrier-hosted call center innovations that include support for advanced voice and multimedia, unified communications, Web meetings and mobility. The new features integrate call center services that can be delivered to business over IP or a mix of IP and legacy equipment.
