New CDN Offerings Announced by Verizon

01/08/2009

Content owners and content delivery network (CDN) operators got a late but likely desirable Christmas present from Verizon Communications Inc., which has announced connection options cheaper than IP transport services.

What that means for both constituencies is they can connect to Verizon’s Internet servers directly for less than the previous method and for less than the telco’s original direct connect rates.

And with both groups looking to move more video content with a close eye on the cost of doing so, the lower rate option could prove appealing.

“We've actually offered direct connections at carrier hotels before, but this is an aggressively priced program to attract more content to our network and to our customers and to make the content delivery better,” said a Verizon spokesperson. “It comes faster, with less chance of error, since it does not traverse peering process and multiple carriers.”
