Motorola Unveils Updated NBBS, 3G Femtocell

02/07/2008

Motorola Inc. unveiled Thursday its next-generation NBBS device management system, extending the platform to serve wireless carrier needs. The company also unveiled its first 3G femtocell CPE: the 8000 Series, Motorola Femtocell Access Point and the 8100 Series, Motorola Femtocell Ethernet Gateway.

The 5.0 version of the NBBS enables broadband customer premises equipment (CPE), femtocell and mobile device management for WiMAX, GSM/UMTS and CDMA operators.

Motorola's NBBS is a software platform that enables operators to remotely access, configure and troubleshoot the full portfolio of consumer devices - including mobile phones, CPE and femtocells. NBBS is a scaleable, carrier-grade system that manages devices, home networks and services.

Motorola's new edition of the NBBS management platform includes support for OMA DM for WiMAX gateways and handsets as well as 3G handsets; SNMP for cable modems and cable set-top monitoring; TR-069 for DSL gateways, WiMAX gateways, VoIP and IP video; and Telnet for legacy CPE, firewalls, network security and devices.

The 5.0 version of NBBS is ideal for any operators implementing fixed mobile convergence (FMC) strategies, Motorola said. It is a key element for device management over access technologies including DSL, WiMAX, cable and RAN. Some of the latest carrier services optimized by NBBS include femtocells, VoIP, WiMAX, IPTV, VoD and gaming.

NBBS performs the device management role for the Motorola Femtocell platform. These are the first two units from a portfolio of Motorola CPE that will be commercially available in the second half of 2008.

The 8000 Series Motorola Femtocell Access Point is a stand-alone femtocell with an Ethernet bridge. This product is suitable for connecting to a standard home broadband modem or an existing Wi-Fi gateway, the company said.

The 8100 Series Motorola Femtocell Ethernet Gateway is an integrated femtocell access point, with a four-port Ethernet gateway, VoIP port, USB connections and an integrated 802-11 b/g Wi-Fi router. This enables users to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi from their computers and to the 3G cellular network via their standard 3G phone.
