Motorola Possibly Selling Mobile Devices Unit

01/31/2008

Motorola Inc. said late Thursday it might sell its struggling mobile devices division.

The news came a week after the equipment maker’s new CEO, Greg Brown, said a turnaround in the devices unit would take longer than expected and a couple of days after an analyst with Nomura International predicted in a client note that Motorola would exit the handset business. Richard Windsor wrote that Motorola is likely to concentrate on becoming an enterprise and government company.

Indeed, Motorola said it now is exploring different options for regaining market share and restoring stockholder value. One of those options could include getting rid of the mobile devices business.

The company said it wouldn’t be discussing the matter further unless the board of directors approves a deal or finds some other way to fix Motorola’s mobile devices problem.

Motorola also announced on Thursday it will pay a quarterly dividend of 5 cents per share to stockholders. The dividend will be paid on April 15.
