Microsoft-Yahoo Search Deal Could Be In Jeopardy

The search deal between Microsoft and Yahoo could be in jeopardy.

The Justice Department this week said it wants more information and specifics of the proposed transaction, which calls for embattled Yahoo to use Microsoft’s Bing search engine.

Trouble is, antitrust regulators last year put the kibosh on a similar arrangement between Google and Yahoo. There doesn’t seem to be much that distinguishes the latest deal from that one – well, except that a Microsoft-Yahoo combination still wouldn’t match Google’s approximately 75 percent market share.

Another thing to consider is that if the Justice Department does let Microsoft and Yahoo go through with their plan, that would definitely help keep Yahoo from going under.
