Microsoft to Launch Open-Source Apps Market

Microsoft Corp. is taking a page from the mobile application-store craze with its Microsoft Web Platform, which will be a central repository for open-source applications, services and support for Windows.

Microsoft envisions a set of tools, servers and frameworks that interface with the open-source community. It will likely use its cloud computing platform, Windows Azure, to publish the information to the Web.

The computing giant is merely in the planning stages for the initiative, but it said the strategy herald’s a shift in direction for Microsoft, to embrace the power of the Web more fully.
