NXTcomm: Kontron, Astute Networks Deliver ATCA Storage Platform For Edge-Level Content

Kontron and Astute Networks -- one a provider of embedded, modular solutions and the other a provider of bladed storage solutions -- announced at NXTcomm this week the first fully-integrated ATCA bladed server-storage solution for network equipment providers to design edge-level content delivery solutions.

The companies said their unique standards-based iSCI over Ethernet server-storage platform will eliminate the need for complex proprietary Fiber Channel storage servers.

The new solution is a two-slot ATCA platform the supports increasing carrier and consumer demands for social networking, IPTV and video on demand (VoD) content delivery applications. Due to these applications, demand for network storage soon will triple current storage capacities.

This platform provides Intel-based server processing with the market’s only 1.5TB iSCI over 10GB Ethernet ATCA blade, which can scale its configuration from a two-slot, 2U ATCA platform supporting 300 standard definition movies deployed in edge networks to a redundant 14-slot ATCA platform supporting 1,800 movies within 9TB of storage deployed in the central office.

Both companies are members of a growing and competitive ATCA ecosystem. They work closely with network equipment providers to supply them with the tools to cost-effectively design new content delivery applications. Kontron is a public company with 2,500 employees and had a record year in 2007 in terms of revenue. “And we have made significant investment in ATCA to continue to develop new products,” said Sven Freudenfeld, head of business development for telecom at Kontron.
