Jungo Adds Fast Channel Change to Residential Gateway
10/02/2008
Jungo Ltd today announced that its OpenRG residential gateway software now supports a patent-pending, fast channel-switching feature designed to enhance the performance of broadband access equipment. While there are many factors affecting IPTV service quality – such as picture quality, transport and reliability – a key quality of experience (QoE) element, according to Jungo, is how quickly and reliably subscribers can change TV channels. Subscribers expect switching among hundreds of channels to be smooth and fast. However, Jungo contends, IPTV users often experience slow response times, and substandard picture quality, further affected by pixelation. These problems tend to increase in homes with multiple set-top boxes (STB). Jungo claims its new technology removes channel-switching overheads by employing a mix of tactics that perform monitoring of available resources such as bandwidth and virtual circuits, and intelligent bandwidth usage assumptions. The vendor says the new feature can be used on any off-the-shelf STB. The vendor did not provide pricing or availability for the new feature on its OpenRG residential gateway.
