iPhone Software Update Gives Hackers Fits

08/08/2008

It was intended to keep hackers at bay, and for now, it appears to be working.

But some iPhone users report Apple’s (AAPL) software update 2.0.1 can cause problems with operation. Apple developed the update, in part, to keep users from “unlocking” the phone ─ in other words, sidestepping the company’s exclusive deal with AT&T.

Some customers who have chosen to unlock their phones say the gadgets are freezing up entirely. Apple CEO Steve Jobs says it’s his company’s job to keep people from “breaking in.” He says the damage to the phone could be irreparable.
