IP/MPLS Forum Unleashes New Mobile Backhaul Tech Spec

10/14/2008

The IP/MPLS Forum has approved the first technical specification under its MPLS in Mobile Backhaul Initiative (MMBI). The MPLS in Mobile Backhaul Networks: Framework and Requirements Technical Specification defines how MPLS can be used to backhaul traffic for mobile operators.

The larger (MMBI) effort, announced last year, is creating a general framework for the use of MPLS technology to transport TDM, ATM, Ethernet and IP RAN backhaul traffic over converged access, aggregation and core networks.

The technical spec announced today provides a specific framework and set of requirements for the use of MPLS in the mobile wireless access and aggregation networks across various RAN interfaces and technologies (e.g., GSM, UMTS, HSPA, LTE, mobile WiMAX, etc.).

Through the use of MPLS in mobile backhaul, operators can:

  • transport a wide array of services, ranging from traditional TDM to ATM, HDLC and IP;
  • support a wide range of resiliency, protection, restoration and OAM functions to ensure the reliability of the backhaul network;
  • better manage utilization of the network, through the traffic engineering and QoS capabilities inherent in MPLS;
  • support and consolidate traffic across a range of transport infrastructures, including DSL, PON, microwave, SONET/SDH, PDH and Ethernet;
  • and lower operating costs through use of MPLS’s control plane which simplifies provisioning of services.
