Hell Hath Frozen: Yahoo! Says Sell to Microsoft

11/06/2008

And so, it has come to pass. Hell has frozen over, pigs have taken to the sky. Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) says it should – gasp – sell to Microsoft Corp. (MSFT).

CEO Jerry Yang made the surprise pronouncement yesterday at a forum in Silicon Valley, this after months of resisting a Microsoft takeover.

Yang’s statement also comes as the ad deal with Google Inc. failed this week. And after all the turmoil Yahoo! has seen this year, selling out makes sense. Buying AOL Inc. does not make as much sense. Yahoo! needs a clear strategy – would buying a dial-up business really provide direction and solid footing? AOL has a content strategy but EarthLink appears better positioned to snap up the company.

Now comes the wait-and-see period. Will Microsoft want to take on a company that fought its advances so vigorously? No culture wars there...
