Helio Installs Gigabit Ethernet Gear

06/04/2008

Helio LLC, which is in merger talks with fellow MVNO Virgin Mobile USA, is installing new Gigabit Ethernet gear to better accommodate subscribers’ needs for bandwidth.

Gigabit Ethernet

The Los Angeles-based Helio will use Foundry Networks Inc.’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet NetIron MLX-16 MPLS metro routers and the FastIron GS PoE-ready Layer 2/3 edge switches. The products all manage voice, data, content, and uploads and downloads. The NetIron can handle capacity of up to 3.84Tbps.

Helio is owned by SK Telecom and EarthLink Inc. Although it targets affluent customers, it has not turned a profit since its 2005 debut. Indeed, EarthLink has stated in past earnings reports that Helio is a drag on its finances and refused to further fund the entity; it maintains a small ownership stake, however.
