In another sign of the continued strength of the transoceanic wholesale business, Global Crossing(GLBC) is expanding capacity on its Atlantic Crossing 1 (AC-1) undersea fiber-optic cable system to meet address demand for broadband services. Omar Altaji, executive vice president of Worldwide Carrier Services at the company, revealed the expansion during the 31st annual Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Global Crossing in the first half plans to add 600gbps of capacity, using T-640 routers from Juniper Networks(JNPR), to the cable’s northern and southern routes. The south route connects Brookhaven, N.Y., to the United Kingdom. The north connection links Brookhaven to Germany and the Netherlands.
“I think there’s an opportunity for people that have large networks to sell or lease these networks to other providers as their infrastructure,” said Luc Ceuppens, senior director, head of product marketing for the High-End Systems Business unit at Juniper Networks, and a standing xchange blogger, told xchange recently.
